Be In ~ 30diMei is a Virtual Reality experience created as a part of the 50x30diMei installation. I wrote, directed, produced and post-production supervised Be In ~30diMei as a way to engage Curacaoan youth in installation’s deeper layers of meaning thru new technology.
The VR experience speaks to the experience of Time and social justice in colonized territories. Be In ~ 30diMei is targeted towards Curacaoan audiences and the narrative may be potentially confusing to visitors lacking knowledge of Curacaoan history.
50x30diMei was a traveling installation commemorating the 1969 racial uprising of May 30th, 1969 on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao, also known as the May Movement.
This installation landed at 6 Curacaoan locations between October & December 2019, starting at the Royal Dutch Shell built oil refinery where the May Movement started as a mass strike in 1969 .
For the 50x30diMei project, I functioned as the lead-curator, including work on the Be In ~ 30diMei VR experience, the installation’s written text (which allowed for two navigational paths speaking to the past or the future), a weekly theater performance based on Boal's Theater of the Oppressed, and a central arts table for visitors to creatively express their experiences around this sensitive chapter in Curacaoan history.
In 2019, Be In ~ 30diMei and 50x30diMei were the creative fruits of academic and independent research that I started at UC Berkeley in 1992. It was an honor to be involved in this project.
